Brunswick River Mural

This year, the City of Brunswick is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its incorporation (April 8, 1890). To commemorate this special occasion, Brunswick Main Street, in collaboration with the City, commissioned an engaging mural depicting the significance of the Potomac River to our city.

Potomac means “great trading place” in the Algonquin language. Here, along its shores, tribes from all corners of the East and Midwest met to barter and trade. The waters of the mighty Potomac and the adjoining C&O Canal provided water and food, goods and services, and jobs and economy to the people of the area.

The Potomac River and the 184.5-mile C&O Canal National Historical Park continue to this day to offer vast benefits to the City through recreation and tourism. The National Park Service reports that Brunswick annually attracts over 100,000 visitors in addition to our residents who walk, run, pedal, paddle, boat, float, camp and relax with all the river and the park have to offer in a family-friendly environment.

This captivating mural will help us honor our rich heritage and add to the continued rejuvenation and beautification of Brunswick’s downtown. This project is envisioned as a community-sponsored action with no public funds. It was paid for entirely with private and non-profit donations.
