Brunswick Main Street Information

What is Main Street?

Main Street Maryland is a downtown revitalization program created in 1998 by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. The program strengthens the economic potential of Maryland's traditional main streets and neighborhoods. Using a competitive process, Main Street Maryland selects communities who have made a commitment to succeed, and helps them improve the economy, appearance and image of their traditional downtown business districts. Brunswick proudly received the Main Street designation in the spring of 2004.

About Brunswick Main Street

Under the Main Street Maryland umbrella, we are a non-profit organization with the mission of revitalizing downtown Brunswick as an attractive and lively city center.  Brunswick Main Street has a volunteer board of directors comprised of residents, business owners, and community leaders. It employs one part-time manager to handle the administration and management of the program.  Volunteers interested in revitalizing historic Brunswick carry out programs and activities.

Brunswick Main Street focuses on preserving our historic character and enhancing the image of downtown.  We focus on four areas:  promotions, economic restructuring, design and organization to achieve our goals.

Why should our city as a whole promote and support Brunswick Main Street?

The historic downtown area is the heart and soul of our community.  Without a healthy downtown of which we can all be proud, a sense of place and foundation is lost. This area of our city is home to many important buildings and structures that need a stable and long lasting future.

Who funds Brunswick Main Street?

We are a non-profit organization and currently receive no federal and limited state grant money. The majority of funding is provided locally.  Property owners, retailers, businesses, financial institutions, the City of Brunswick, and the individual citizens of Brunswick provide financial support, each making a significant contribution.
